Site: VaryWell

Here’s a site that’s worth a look for all those who appreciate interesting navigation, innovative use of both 2D and 3D… and connoisseurs of anything cool.

Michael Battle - Varywell

Ryan and Jason (brothers/buddies??) proclaim their solemn oath “to inject pure premium-ness into everything we touch”. Who can argue with that strategy? Bravo.

Their site oozes slick ribbons of style… I feel cooler for just looking at it…. get your dose:

Plush Toy Modelling Interface

OK - this one’s not Flash, but it is 3D and it does demonstrate a novel use of an interactive interface. Maybe you’ll get some ideas for your next game or application?

Michael Battle - Plush Toy Modelling Interface

In the following video, Tuki Mori from the University of Tokyo tries very hard to tell us about her new application that enables a user to interactively design and sew a plush toy. The program automatically provides the sewing pattern which can also be manipulated and visualised in real-time.

It sounds a little left-field… but take a minute and give it a look - I’m sure you’ll find the interface interesting.

Adobe AS3 3D Demo

Here’s a quick link for those who are interested in AS3 and the 3D sexiness that comes with it.

header_3d.jpg

I’m not sure how new it is - or even if it’s using Papervision3D or Sandy or an equivalent - I do know that it looks damn cool and on my machine its blazing fast, even with over 1000 sprites.

flight404’s Flock of Birds

Processing has been around for ages, but for some reason it rarely steps out of the shadows. Wow! This guy could singlehandedly bring it into the spotlight. Looking for a cool flocking visualisation? Look no further.

Michael Battle - flight404 Flock of Birds

If you’re familiar with the kind of work that I’m into, you’ll understand why I find this so mesmerising. Hopefully AS3 will breathe new life into this genre in Flash. I’m still waiting.

Stop reading, just watch…

Red Universe - beta

Here’s something new - Red Interactive, a Californian Ad Agency, have just announced beta access to a virtual community-chatroom-esque site, “Red Universe”.

Michael Battle - Red Universe

It’s kind of reassuring to know that when the world is doing their best to take Flash into 3D (and doing a great job of it, by the way), some people are happy just making the X and Y axis prettier.

Impressive 3D Interface

Just stumbled across this seriously cool 3D interface and thought it was worth a mention.

Michael Battle - 3D Interface

I’m not sure how new it is (hopefully some of you haven’t seen it before!) but I think it’s one of the most innovative things I’ve seen in flash.

New FootlooseMoose Logo

Amongst finishing up at M&C and getting ready for Samantha’s folks to visit next week, I’ve been trying to organise the new look for FootlooseMoose. As the loyal visitors will know, I’m starting up my own Flash Games business and pursuing a number of other projects.

Michael Battle - FootLooseMoose logo header

First things first, I needed to come up with a new logo. Keywords I used were fun, funny, bold, carefree, innocent, magical and zany. I really liked the moose (who’s name is Bruce, by the way) in the previous version of the logo (which still can been seen on the holding page at www.footloosemoose.com) but this time I needed something that was easier to animate - and also, importantly, something that could easily be the main character in a game.

This is what I came up with…

New Book

About a five minute walk from where I live is a nice little boutique book store… and I’ve been keen to pick something up from there ever since we moved in to our new place.

New Flash Book

So you can imagine my nerdish delight when I stumbled across this little gem.

Gallery Incomplet: Flash Experiments

I’ve just come across a site dedicated to Flash 8 experiements… and not just any expertiments; these would make any maths guru proud.

I especially enjoyed setting myself on fire (you need a webcam to check this out).

Also, the enthusiast should check out his blog: http://www.gskinner.com/blog/

Sony Ericsson - CeBIT 2006

Found this site yesterday and keep getting drawn back to it. It’s really quite simple but is a good example of how Flash 8 is shaking things up a little.I’ll give this bubble-fisheye effect a go in the coming weeks.

Flash Masters: Ferry Halim

I’ve known about this site for a while now though just stumbled across it again today. If you like Flash games, prepare yourself for some of the most elegant ideas online.

His designs are often beautiful and the simplicity in his game concepts is quite inspirational.

Prepare yourself for something genre defining…

Flash Masters: Levitated.net

I stayed up until 3am this morning simply because I couldn’t leave this site.

Upon visiting you’ll find a library of Flash experiments that seem to be motivated by elegance and simplicity and powered by Math and Physics. Among them you’ll find investigations into Artificial Life algorithms, Data Visualisation, Isometric Projection, Particles and Recursive Construction.

A few of my favorites:

… though they’re all brilliant! Many of the projects are open source (GNU License) so perhaps you’ll see “levitated-esque” developments in my work from now on.

Flash Masters: yugop.com

I’ve decided that I’m going to start sharing some of the fantastic and inspirational Flash sites that I come across - the first one in this series being yugop.net - here Yugo Nakamura presents a showcase of experimental interfaces developed in Flash and Director.

It’s hard to explain exactly the effect that sites like this have on me, it honestly inspires and excites me to the point that I feel anxious and ill! Crazy but true (and possibly the geekiest thing I’ve ever admitted!).

If you’re interested in Interface design make sure you check out this work.
