Phlock - Flocking meets Sound

Well, Mozart it aint… but, you know what, Mozart was never this pretty.

Michael Battle - Phlock

There’s something quite hypnotic about watching a flocking simulation. The pseudo-intelligent behaviour that we witness so often in nature, which can be mimicked with just a few simple rules, is really quite compelling regardless of the canvas on which it is presented.

From the site:

Phlock is an interactive installation that allows viewers to sequence sounds and create music using the emergent behavior of digital creatures.

Enough said. Now watch:

Experiment: Tri-Life

I had the idea for this experiment a few months ago and I’ve actually attempted it a few times - each iteration being close to what I was intending to achieve but alas, not close enough. This time I’m happy enough with the solution to release it to the world.

Michael Battle - Experiment: TriLife

I’ve decided that I’m really quite fascinated with three concepts in particular, broadly these are - 1) Automata/Intelligent Agents 2) Intransitivity (the Rock-Paper-Scissors rule set), and 3) Organising information spatially, or by proximity. You’ll see these ideas again and again throughout this site (and no doubt even more in the future!).

This latest adventure touches on all three of these concepts. Brace yourself.

Experiment: Parasites

Today I had this idea for a visualisation and since work wasn’t too urgent I decided to run with it.

Michael Battle - Flash Experiment

Though the idea is pretty simple, I still think the result is quite fun to watch.

Drumming by Proximity

I’ve been meaning to explore the use of sound in my experiments, and this post marks the start of that adventure.

Michael Battle - Flash Experiments - Proximity Drumming

The idea was to scatter a number of instruments around the stage and trigger their use by giving meaning to the proximity relationship they each have with their peers.

I was secretly hoping that my legion of sound monkeys could write some Shakespeare and I think sometimes it does actually sound like there’s method to the madness… though obviously… there are still a few more secrets for the monkeys to learn before I send them into the DJ business.

When our eyes meet…

Continuing on in the Automata series and in response to a comment on the Geometry Gene Pool experiment, I’ve had a play around with some now familiar concepts, but have limited it to a triumvirate of competing entities.

Geometry Gene Pool

So I decided to have another look at automata-type behaviour - this time we observe these little swimming creatures and how they try to convert every other creature they come across to their way of thinking.

My Flash Automata Experiment

Finally! I’ve been wanting to have a go at this for a long time and this morning I got that familiar Flash urge… (otherwise known as thesis procrastination) and I had to have a go.

The experiment shows a number of randomly generated boxes that interact in a variety of ways - click the buttons on the lower left of the screen to see the difference.

FYI - “Automata” is defined on Dictionary.com as:

  1. A self-operating machine or mechanism, especially a robot.
  2. One that behaves or responds in a mechanical way.
