Yeah, this is very cool. It’s difficult to describe why I like this so much. No doubt it has a lot to do with the use of particle effects throughout!

Radiohead’s new music video takes geometric forms and describes them with animated particles which results in a 3D sculpture/silhouette effect. I’m sure you’ll agree that watching their interpretation of real-world data is quite seductive and satisfying.
Here’s the video:
After watching the clip a few times I couldn’t help but feel that this reminded me of something. After further deliberation I decided that it was kinda like the sound-vision effect in Daredevil… as seen below picturing Jennifer Garner… and, yes, I know the movie sucked.

If you take that effect and mate it with ye olde pin cushion art frame thingo (below) I think you’d get quite close to what the Radiohead boys have come up with.

The data was captured using 3D video acquisition systems from Geometric Informatics, and a 64-element and a 360-degree LIDAR from Velodyne. The technique is called “Structured Light” or “Active Triangulation” - here’s a quick overview of the theory.
Now, what you’ve all been waiting for… watch the making-of video here:
The actual visualisation seems to have been done in Processing but there’s an interactive demo done in Flash. I encourage you to take a moment and play.
