Experiment: Impressionist Image Renderer

Well, it’s not quite Monet or Renoir, but I bet van Gogh would’ve given his left ear for a piece of this action…

Michael Battle - Impressionist Image Renderer

Ok, so maybe I’m being a little flexible with the ‘Impressionist’ title but I think what we’ve got here is a valid way of artistically presenting images in Flash. Warm up the Louvre… I need somewhere to hang this stuff!

What’s happening is three layers of BitmapData rendering an image in coloured dots at varying resolutions. You may even notice that I’m using the maze rendering algorithm that I’ve used previously (see The Amazing Render for an overview and a demo).

I’m quite intrigued with the outcome. Because the dots draw along random paths, each render will be slightly different. The fine detail layer of dots particularly manipulates the feeling of the image as it effectively defines the focus and attracts the eye of the viewer.

I also find the act of watching the image emerge to be quite exciting. As with my previous experiment, there seems to be a lightbulb moment where you actually understand what it is you’re looking at. It’s almost as if it becomes a game, simply because the viewer is denied detail until quite late in the process.

I wonder what difference it would make if I varied the brush shape?

Hey, that works real nice. Certainly much better than the ‘impressionist’ filter in photoshop, which is what I was expecting.
