Moving Forward

As I’m finding it a little tricky to make time to work on Flash experiments, I thought I’d offer a quick explanation as to what’s been absorbing my free hours.

Michael Battle - Moving Forward

Firstly - XBOX 360: Hallowed be thy name. I picked up one of these little beauties in July and I’ve been continually impressed and entranced. I just got NHL 08 and I’m picking up Halo 3 this week, so if you’re in the neighborhood, look me up: ‘footloosemoose’ is my username.

On a more formal note: About a month ago I made the decision to leave Lightmaker and to pursue other opportunities. Whilst I fully enjoyed my time with the people there, career-wise, I felt that I needed a little more than the ’start-up’ phase that these guys are currently in. My main goal was to get myself around other coders and Flash developers to help accelerate my own professional development - Lightmaker has this, just not really in Australia (yet!). During my stay I worked on some in-house stuff and a few mini-projects for Adobe (which I can’t really talk about beyond that). Above all, I sincerely thank Lightmaker for having me and wish Lucas and the team the best of luck for the future.

So where am I now? I’m happy to announce that I’m now working as a Senior Interactive Developer at DTDigital / Ogilvy Interactive (they’ve recently merged). I’ve only been there for a week but so far it’s been absolutely brilliant - exactly what I’m looking for. Large, interesting clients, a fantastic team and a great office - and, like M&C, we’ve got the free bar… can’t beat that! Importantly, I’m one of four Flash guys there and we’re complimented by a sizable in-house C# development team. The outfit as a whole seems to be very polished and professional and I really enjoy the idea of spending my time there for the forseeable future. The days have been flying by so far - always a good sign.

Albeit a short stay, I managed to use my free time with Lightmaker well. I’ve taught myself AS3 and AIR and am confident playing with Papervision3D. I look forward to playing more with these tools and technologies and hopefully showing you guys the results.

That’s all for now - Cheers!

Nice work Michael :)

I must admit, Halo 3 has been absorbing alot of my time recently too! (username: KingScooty) .. It sounds like you’ve found your new home, especially with that free bar! hehe. Do most development firms promote the use of AS3 in house now? Or are most people still trying to get up to speed with it?

I’m personally still in love with AS2 but know i should really make the change soon. Would be awesome if you could post a few little insights on how you made the switchover as it looks a little daunting!

Keep us posted on any experiements you cook up! :)

Peace out.

Finnally clocked Halo 3.. Matt and I played through the rest of it in a epic 6 hour rampage. It wasn’t too hard, just a grind. I’ve got Skate now which is pretty sweet, and Orange Box comes out on Thursday.

My xbox was dead for a few days again but i did the ‘Towel Trick’ (where you wrap it up in towels for 20 minutes to over heat it) and its back online. Don’t know how long it will live for this time but its all good so far.
