MSN Adblock

If you’re anything like me, you enjoy using MSN messenger but you absolutely hate the advertisement at the bottom of the main window. I work with two monitors and that annoying little ad keeps flickering in the corner of my eye.

I’ve tried a bunch of different strategies to minimise the annoyance. Moving the window so the ad is off the bottom of the screen only works for so long before the cunning MSN programmers make the window pop up again! I’ve used third party ‘crack’ type programs that strip all of the ads out. Whilst they’re good, I’ve recently upgraded to the beta version of MSN 8… so there’s nothing out yet.

I’ve met their challenge with a rather feeble solution - but it works!

A little application that sits on top of that spot where the ad is. You use your right mouse button to drag it around and it should always sit above MSN (and all other programs - so may not be good if you only have one screen). It works like this…

So - I’m happy with the result. It’s made MSN much less annoying! Click the link below to get your hands on this little ray of sunshine and leave a comment if you find it helpful.

Cool idea… but why so attached to MSN Messenger? Using Trillian or some other software will solve this problem anyway… and as long as you aren’t using video chat… Or even better… get a Mac - no adds on MSN Mac version ;) (and I am sure it’s not for lack of a market!!! So don’t go there!!!)

Hey - I am yet to try Trillian. I’ve heard mixed reviews on it. I have tried GAIM though and I was unhappy with it for some reason - it was crashing or something, I think?! Oh, it didn’t detect file transfers across our network - it always sent the files via the internet. Annoying!

I guess MSN is just my sentimental default - and the new beta version 8 looks very slick (can even hide those ugly tabs) so I’m happy to stick with it. I’m sure my aforementioned utility has something to do with that, though!

Alternatively you could just push the lower half of the Messenger window off the bottom of the screen.
